Find direction and speed of wind by making a Wind Vane & Anemometer | School Science Projects

  • Make a wind vane, anemometer & a wind sock and understand:
    • How to calculate the speed of the wind
    • How to know the direction of the wind
  • Make a spray gun to understand Bernoulli’s principle – high speed winds cause low pressure Understand the categorization of wind storms – Beaufort’s scale

The Science of Storms

Storms and Cyclones rank highly among calamities that cause human casualties – largely owing to most public’s lack of readiness in the face of such disasters. The crux of the issue, of course, cannot be to eradicate storms and cyclones – which is a near impossible task. However, by ensuring a more scientific understanding and public awareness of these disasters, one can assume a more confident face with the onset of such situations.

Butterfly Fields fulfills this purpose while also teaching the important basics of tools that deal with winds, storms and cyclones; which are crucial concepts of a 7th grader’s Science syllabus. Not only will your child be fundamentally more equipped and contain more knowledge about weather sciences, but they will also invigorate their sense of accomplishment, innovativeness, out-of-the-box thinking and focus on the subject!

The Winds, Storms and Cyclones kit consists of the following activities:

  • With provided material, your child will learn how to make a wind vane (an instrument that can determine the direction of wind)
  • They will learn how to make and use a simple anemometer, an instrument that can determine the speed of wind
  • And a wind sock to further find out:
    • The relative speed of the wind
    • The direction of the wind
  • Your child will be taught how to make a spray gun to understand Bernoulli’s principle; which explains how high speed winds cause low pressure
  • Finally, they will implement an interactive activity to understand the categorization of wind storms based on Beaufort’s scale!
